Vegan week # 1

March 12, 2012 By Tamara

March 5, 2012 to March 12, 2012

“It’s so hard being a vegan in South Korea!” haha…it isn’t really. That’s just what I keep telling people because I feel like its what they want to hear.

Being Vegan at school
I had to explain the challenge to my co-workers because they noticed I was picking around more in my lunch tray. At first they didn’t understand but then I thought describing the diet as “eating like a monk” would be more relatable for their thought process.

The lunch Gods were pretty kind to me last week. I had options which were goods. Here are some pictures.

Cooking at home
Since I love to cook and try recipes I’ve been having fun reading different vegan blogs thinking about what I want to try. Come to think of it, I haven’t bought meat in a while anyway. Its too damn expensive >.< The last time was in December for my Christmas party.

I have been experimenting with Korea recipes too. I love Maangchi on YouTube. She has helped me out a lot!

So cooking at home has been easy.

Eating out
My friends that I hang out with the most are vegetarian so eating out with them is good.

Namaskar indian restaurant in Ulsan

But last Wednesday I hung out with my Korean Auntie and her friends. I didn’t want to have to do the whole “I am a vegan” speech so I just let her order what she wanted when we went out. I had chicken chili spaghetti.

It was weird because I felt guilty. Such a fast transition was happening with my thought process. But I really did feel so guilty. And it wasn’t good food. I don’t know what is with Koreans and their sweet spaghetti…gross!

I went with Ana to Loving Hut in Busan and ate vegan food. It was so good! Here is a picture.

Physical and Mental health
I being feeling so good! Like so much energy even though I had less sleep than normal all last week. I have been working out too! Before coming to Korea I was a P90X and Insanity junkie! And I was getting into running. But I worked out once in November and that was it. Wait I did go hiking in SinBul mountain (death mountain and I will never go hiking again) but that was it. My skin is starting to clear up on my face. I had a severe out break when I was on vacation. But its drying up now with the aid of products and I’d like to think my diet.
Also my stomach doesn’t feel as bloated as it did last week. Actually I didn’t even realize my stomach was bloated 🙁
The Internet

Searching the web and reading blogs have been really helpful.

I’ve found:
  1. a vegan in Seoul that bakes yummy treats https://www.alienbakeshop.com/
  2. a vegan in Busan, which is a lot closer to me than Seoul but she writes about her day to day
  3. tons of vegan recipe sites
  4. A vegan buffet in Busan
  5. directions to the 2nd Loving Hut in Busan 🙂
  6. the Black Girls Run website

My friend Ana also told me about “sister vegan” who has a worpress site. There is also a different lady named “sister vegetarian”.

My research for week one has gone well. I’ve only had one slip up but the journey continues.

Let me know if you have any vegan information you would like to share!
