Today makes day 8 of life in Spain. It’s a beautiful Sunday afternoon but yet here I am at home typing a blog post 🙂
For the last 2 or 3 days the town has been celebrating the life of local churches’ Saint. The party has been going on non-stop. The phrase “party hard” I’m sure was invited in Spain. To the amusement of everyone in the town, well everyone that likes to joke about it with me, the main location of the festival activities is right by my apartment.
Let me paint the picture for you.
As soon as I step out of my apartment I walk into hundreds of tables and chairs full for side walk cafe patrons. What the hell! Where did this random cafe that never existed before come from? From what I’ve been told it is owned by a “father” from the local church who now works in Peru. The money from the cafe goes to support the community he works with in Peru. So every year during this lovely weekend in September it appears 🙂 It’s actually a really great charity idea, don’t you think? When I open my living room window, the nightly bombs (yes bombs!!) and fireworks sound AND smell like they are in my apartment. Lastly, the non-stop carnival music and electronica reggaton plays all day, ALL DAY! I’m not even sure how I’ve managed to get any sleep.
Wait yes, I know how…coming home at 3 am. Mind you, since I am still adjusting to this “we do everything later in the day” lifestyle, I’ve had to excuse myself twice to go home and get some rest. If I didn’t I would arrive home at 9am. Like I said before, they PARTY HARD here. And I been hanging out with LATE 20’s (like me), older folks, parents, and other teachers. I’m not talking about partying with the “I just graduated from college or am currently in college, Botellón crew, it’s the much more sophisticated, we are grown and sexy crew. I realized I’m total weak sauce. I just can’t hang. How do you even prepare for this lifestyle?…^___^
Speaking of “grown and sexy”, why does everyone look like they stepped out a Zara or Chanel advertisement? I feel so underdressed ALL THE TIME! One of the teachers, who looks exactly like Celine Dion by the way, told me that this is a celebration time so everyone has on their best attire. I saw her on saturday (yesterday) before heading to lunch with another teacher and she was dressed to the 9’s! She came to collect me later that night and she had on a completely different outfit with deep red suede stiletto pumps! While I still had on my cute little Ann Taylor dress from lunch 🙁
*Weak Sauce*
It will be amusing to look back at all my Spain post a year from now to see how much I’ve evolved. Because thus far these last few days have been really great!
