Jamaican in South Korea

October 31, 2011 By Tamara

I’ve been in South Korea for about 75 days now and I have cooked a meal in my apartment 1 time! This is odd for me because I really love to cook! Secretly I believe I am a chef…but I guess its not really a secret anymore if I just told you right? 🙂

Anyway due to a series of unfortunate events in the last…75 days(one involving fruit flies and maggot babies!). I have relied on Korean take out and left overs. Hmmm maybe this is why I have lost so much weight AND have been having frequent headaches(shrugs).

Last night for the first time I cooked a real meal in my apartment. One of my favorite Korean friends and I have decided to give each other cooking lessons. Yes, and last night the lessons commenced with a trip to Jamaica. What was on the menu? Jamaican Brown Stew Chicken and white rice.

Like professional chef… 🙂 …I packed my favorite spices when coming to Korea. However cooking last night helped me to realize I had forgotten some KEY spices! They include a bottle of browning, and some allspice! No I have not seen these things in Ulsan. So I just improvized using some soy sauce and oyster sauce (for a extra kick of flavor).

Needless to say the meal came out very delicious and my “cooking student” did an excellent job! I had some reggae music playing in the background for a little more island feel. The meal made me miss home and my families cooking. But it was great to speak about my culture and family life with someone who is so interested in learning the information.

Check out some pictures below:

The Brown stew is almost ready!

Yes…I know I need to work on my plating skills…but I was sooo ready to eat!

Dinner for two! No knives but chopsticks…we didnt even need them:)
My plating skills  aren’t THAT bad… right???
