After I got ready I had planned on visiting an area called Little India and the Singapore zoo. I never made it to the zoo today but I did find Little India.
I downloaded and app on my Ipod called “Waalkz”. It gives a very great walking tour of four neighborhoods in Singapore. The four are: Little India, Boat Quay, Chinatown, Arab Quarters. The app is free and it was really useful. And the tours last 2-3.5 hours. Like a dumm-dumm I forgot my head phones so I had to hold my Ipod to my ears on full volume to hear my electronic tour guide.
Here are some cool pictures I snapped of the area.
The tour led me inside Tekka wet market. I purchased some coriander powder from a spice stand and headed to the hawkers stalls. While there I saw a man sitting at a table alone. One side of his face looked like it suffered from parotid tumors. It was completely unrecognizable and drooped down almost touching his shoulder. I had a calming sense of sympathy for him. I know what it feels like to be stared at especially living in Asia as a black woman. But I can’t imagine or fathom what it feels like for him.
For lunch I ate at on of the the hawker stalls in Tekka Market. I had briyani rice and fish from a Muslim stall that boasted at being the best. I had to run away from the owner the first time I walked by. I wanted to look at what all the stalls had to offer before deciding. He smiled when he saw me slowly walking back and told me to choose a table.
I walked around a bit more after lunch then stopped inside one of the Indian markets. I purchased some soaps, neem powder, henna and indigo.
I returned back to hostel shortly after to drop off my purchases and to look up directions to Orchard st. I wanted to visit the island nations only H&M and have dinner in the area. I also wanted to traveled there by bus to test out another mode of transportation. Before taking the bus to Orchard street I walked down to Ann Siang Road. It was really close to Chinatown, where I stayed, and it was mentioned on a blog as a good street to go to for bargain shopping. I found a vintage shop and ended up leaving with a skirt and a chiffon half top. Then I walked around some more and passed a cafe called Le Chocolat. I glimpsed through the glass door and saw a multi layer rainbow cake.
It was as if the cake beckoned for me to come inside because before I knew it I was inside ordering the last one.
I had cake and lemonade and it came up to $14 (SD)…ummm what??!! Anyway it wasn’t until I left the cafe I realized it was actually on the bottom of Scarlet Hotel.
*Sigh*…I have to be more careful next time. Anything attached to a hotel or an airport or train station is ridiculously more expensive! The caked looked so yummy! Key word looked. It actually tasted like stale bread. And the cream in the middle tasted like lightly sweetened butter. So I guess I ate stale bread and butter for “Dinch” today 🙁
You remember what “Dinch” means right?!
When leaving Ann Siang road I passed a place called “The Loft” that served breakfast ALL DAY! I know where I am having breakfast tomorrow. Even though the hostel has breakfast. But this morning when I did have some cereal at the breakfast table I found myself in an awkward unavoidable conversation with an older woman who was having breakfast as well.
Anyway a mental note was made about The Loft and I head to the Peoples Park Complex to catch the bus that would take me to Orchard street. The bus system was very easy to use. There is a scrolling moniter that tells you when your bus number will arrive and posted schedule of times for every bus that stops at that stand. All in English too!I think the price was $1.30(SD) Hmmm its about time I go to get a card that I can use on the bus and trains.
Once at Orchard street I realized I was in shopaholic paradise. I contemplated on if I was a shopaholic. No..I don’t think, more like a shopper optimist. I look at things that I want to buy but tell myself I will after I save more money for X,Y,Z. I like to look at pretty things 🙂
I did get some brown oxford style shoes that I have been looking for since last year. I saw some in H&M for $39(SD), after I purchased a pair somewhere else for $15 (SD). Score!!
I retired to the hostel after 11pm. What a good day today has been! But I am so tired and glad the beds at Wink are so comfortable ZZZzzz -_-
