BEDA Spain: Why I’m leaving

June 1, 2014 By Tamara

This update is long overdue.

But I thought I should share that my renewal process with the BEDA Spain program was canceled.

Why?

My career aspirations and outlook for my future “adult self” has changed. And to continue to stifle in this role as an underpaid and disrepected ESL teacher in Spain seems a bit ridiculous. I no longer find happiness with the lesson plans because I’m not teaching the way I would like to teach. Education should be fun! Language learner should be enjoyable. Strictly teaching from a book is rather dull and uninspiring.

April 26th was the “final exam” day for all the teachers outside of Spain taking the online class.

That morning I woke up to go, still having not purchased my 50 euro RENFE train ticket. Suddenly as if struck with one of Oprah’s “AHA moments” I decided I’m not going.

There were 2 options for my future I was battling and dragging my feet to make a decision.

In the moment I chose the better option. If you read this blog you can kind of figure out what I’m doing next. But I won’t fully announce it until June 16th when classes are over.

Because I didn’t take the test my renewal process was canceled. But  I saved myself  50 euros (train) + 175 euros ( to confirm your return).

The next 11 days will be spent saying my goodbyes to the kiddos, teachers  and my adopted hometown while I finish strong!

But saying good bye to some of my private lesson students last week was really sad.

Soon I will post a reflection video similar to the one for South Korea.

If there are any questions you would like me to address about my BEDA experience, please leave them below or send any email ^_^

    Hi Tamara,

Sorry to hear you won’t be renewing. As a BEDA first timer, reading this made me a little nervous, but I realise everyone’s experience will be unique and appreciate your perspective. Wondering if you could share why you feel disrespected?…Has there been a lack of support? What things, if any, did you like about the program? Regarding the exam, is it pass/fail? What concepts does it cover?

Hey Pocero, I am working on a document that will answer all these questions. Stay tuned for the release.

All aboard!
